In Egypt, thousands of girls are having their genitals mutilated every year and no one is held responsible for this abhorrent crime!! FGM is one of the most rampant problems in Egypt. Not one single direct legislation was stipulated to punish those responsible those crimes against innocent little girls. A crime described as irreversibe against any woman!
I recommend that you read this wonderful post about a "case of an Egyptian female genital mutilation" by Mostafa Hussein. He wrote about a true story about a 10 year old girl who was admitted with post-circumcision bleeding in the hospital where he works! It is a must read blog post.

Send a strong message: if this barbaric practice is exercised in the US, those who commit this atrocity will get a lot of time to think about it behind bars.

Anonymous: Part of your comment is correct. FGM is crime, committed by individuals, and needs to be treated as such.
BUT...Ethiopia doesn't send the U.S. oil, nor terrorism.
Ethiopia's culture is much more than FGM (I am not even sure FGM is truly a part of it). Ethiopians built a civilization before Europeans did, and even have a Judeo-Christian heritage.
If instead you are talking about Muslim culture -- well, what the Europeans and hence Americans imported from the includes Aristotle, the modern (Arabic) numerical system, algebra, glass, paper and printing, and a number of other things.

This practice is most prevelent amongst coptic christian communities. Where many preists refuse to baptize girls who have not under gone the procedure.

The first verse you cited refers to original sin. Prior to the fall- When satan convinced Eve to eat the fruit from the forbidden tree- man was one with God. There was so sin. This act of disobeying God's command not to eat from this tree was the first. According to scripture, death was the punishment for the mankind (starting with Eve) turning to satan.
The second verse is not from the bible. There is no book called Sirach.
Many bible verses must be placed in context of the time and circumstances (same with the reading of the Koran). The 3rd and 4th verses were from Paul, who was traveling and spreading christianity. When he wrote those, he was in a city where there was chaos in the churches. The women were illiterate. Women did not know the bible, and were making noise and chatting in church. Notice that in I Corinthians, women are not the only people Paul tells to be “silent.” He uses the same word in verses 28 and 30 to tell tongue-speakers and prophets to be silent when others speak. In both of those verses, he is calling for a temporary silence, not a complete and permanent prohibition.
Paul's letters must be read in context. They were written to a specific audience in a specific city where Paul traveled to. When these verses were written, women were illiterate and scripturally ignorant- they could not teach what they did not know! The broad principles are timeless, but almost no christians take these verses literally, one by one, because they must be understood within the context in which these letters were written.

Let us hope this is not a single instance of prosecution, but a trend that continues and spreads outside of the united States.
You know, I have heard that many of the Islamic and African countries where FMG is common have laws on the books against it, which were probably placed there to appease the west. These laws are never enforced though. The key to getting rid of this horrific act is to enforce those laws and make it a cultural stigma to do such a thing.

Aristotle was a Greek philosopher of the 4th century BC, predating Islam by roughly 1000 years.
Arabic numeral system is unimportant, as it's just a numeric character set. Any other set would have worked as well... what's important is the decimal system. But, just so you know, "arabic" numerals actually came from India.
Your comment about algebra is correct.
Man made glass objects are at least 3500 years old, predating Islam by some 4000+ years.
Modern paper was invented in China some 2000 years ago. Perhaps you mean Papyrus which was invented in Egypt at least 4000 years ago.
Printing seems to have been invented in Korea, but some Europeans claim it was invented in Europe. Can't find any correlation to Africa or the middle east at all.

I'll get to that in a minute, but my overall point is that Anonymous is wrong that what the U.S. has received from "these countries" is a "backwards culture." The U.S., and the Western world in general, has received quite a lot from the Muslim world.
1. All of the west's versions of Aristotle and numerous other Greek writers came from Arabic translations preserved in the Muslim world. For example, when the Muslims were driven from Toledo Spain in 1085, medieval scholastics flocked there to get their hands on Greek texts.
2. The Arabic numeral system is NOT simply the characters, but rather the idea of place. I believe it is indeed from India (although Joseph Needham claimed to have found evidence of this system existing earlier in China, including the use of zero). But the west got it from the Arabs. And it is enormously important -- or would you care to demonstrate long division, fractions, calculus, etc. using Roman numerals?
3. Paper -- I read recently (but cannot recall where) that the Arabs learned paper-making from the Chinese. The Arab contribution was to develop a way to make cheap paper from linen (flax) or somesuch field crop; less expensive and capable of production in great quantities. And the Europeans learned this from the Muslim Arabs.
4. Printing. I think I got carried away. I don't have any source that says the Muslim Arabs introduced printing to the west, and I think they did not.
5. Glass -- again, not invented by the Muslims, but that wasn't the point -- the point is that it is something that the west "imported" from this allegedly backwards culture.
6. Algebra...on which we agree.
So I stand by 5 of my 6 claims.
