Because Muslims are Persecuted.. Theme park calls off "Muslim Fun Day"
Well this is how the story will be interpreted by Muslims worldwide as they feel being persecuted. Actually, this is not true as generalization is always a bad habit. To be honest, my opinion this is no fun day. How come park rides be segregated by sex? Will that be fun? There is no wonder the day was called off.
Here is the story:
LONDON (Reuters) - Britain's biggest theme park has called off the country's first "National Muslim Fun Day" because of lack of interest, the park said Wednesday.
Alton Towers in central England was to open on September 17 for Muslims -- with halal food, a strict dress code and prayer areas.
Music, gambling and alcohol were to be banned for the day and theme park rides such as "Ripsaw," "Corkscrew" and "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory" all segregated by sex.
But the park said the event's organizers, Islamic Leisure, who rented the park for the day and were marketing the event, had called it off due to "insufficient ticket sales."
The fun day had caused some consternation: a non-Muslim couple scheduled to hold their wedding at the park's hotel complained to newspapers that event organizers told them the bride and female guests would have to cover up.
The park promised the party would be exempt from the rules. A park spokeswoman said the wedding would take place as planned. More...

What was strange is when I heard about this and checked around different Muslim websites to gauge the response, while some Muslims expressed interest, many Muslims argued that it was "un-Islamic" to have fun!
Do some Muslims in Egypt feel this way? Do some think that any sort of amusement is prohibited?
Tommy, you extrapolate hypotheses from certain Muslim websites, about the attitudes of some 1.2 BILLION plus individuals?

Its seems that there was too little interest on the Muslim part. The cancellation did take place because Muslims are believed to be persecuted.
Tommy, I dont think it is 'un-islamic' to have fun, but maybe some muslims believe in this, not all. You know everything in religion can be subjected to differenet interpretations.

I did not make a generalization. I never stated that all Muslims felt a certain way (in fact, I stated directly that some Muslims were interested); rather, I indicated that many Muslims seemed to feel this way.
What I am curious about is why some Muslims are against any form of recreational activity? Where does such a strange belief spring from? Where do they get such an idea? Is there something in the Qur'an or the hadiths that can be interpreted as forbidding fun? Is this belief fairly common in the Muslim world or is it rare?

"What I am curious about is why some Muslims are against any form of recreational activity?"____For the same reason that many Puritanical Christians are (or were) against any form of recreation or amusement. The basic idea is that unless you devote every minute of the waking day to thinking about or praying to God, you will end up in Hell, tormented for eternity. Music, art or the theatre are evil because they take your mind off thoughts of God and his Laws. It is a kind of paranoia, really. I think people like that can be found in several religions, and they usually feel compelled to make everyone else adopt the same attitudes.
